Mick, I don't have any information to pass on regarding camping facilities, as this is not something I'd ever use for lodgings while travelling. You might search some of the other Posts here, as I believe Kim listed some information on this previously. From what I can remember, many Camping facilities were located away from the main centres, so there might be transportation issues?
With regard to your second question, a "pension" (sometimes spelled "pensione" in Italy) is an inexpensive Hotel / B&B. Here is one definition:
2 /päns-yOn/ [French, from Middle French] a : accommodations especially at a continental European hotel or boardinghouse : ROOM AND BOARD b also pen·sio·ne /pen(t)-'syO-(")nA/ [pensione, from Italian] : a hotel or boardinghouse especially in continental Europe
Hope that helps? Cheers!!!

I've read about both types of setups in respect to camping. I agree that the campsites usually seem to be located well outside the city. In most cases, you do have to book the cabins in advance, because they're very popular. From what I've read, you can usually (not always) get in with a tent.
In Italy, "pensione" used to be an official government description for a type of lodging, but not anymore. Now it's just used by the owners if they consider the term appropriate. These tend to be small, family-run establishments, which may or may not offer the option of other meals besides breakfast. They're somewhat similar to B&Bs - the terms overlap a lot in respect to the sort of accommodation offered.
