I will be going to Italy in May spending time in Venice, Tuscany, Rome and Capri. We like hotels (small are fine) and B&Bs. We don't need to big fancy hotels.
Any suggestions in the areas we are visiting.

I like Hotel Julia in Rome. It's very well-located in my opinion. But you may be able to find a better deal elsewhere, and rooms will likely be small. I did get a great deal for my single room. www.hoteljulia.itFor Venice, I like Hotel Forcola. www.laforcolahotel.comI got a great deal for this hotel through Ryanairhotels.com. Again, I had a single, so can't comment on the doubles. Both of these are 3* hotels, with about 30 rooms, with nice, central locations convenient to transportation, with nice staff and good breakfasts. Capri tends to be very expensive. But I think Anacapri is supposed to have cheaper accommodation. For Tuscany, you would have to decide whether you want to have your base in a city or a rural location, and where. Take a look at www.slowtrav.com for lots of recommendations that might suit you. The Italy board is great.

Will Travel- do you know anything about the Hotel San Gallo? My friend booked that for us to stay at. It looks cute on the website, but what do you think? Not like we could change it now, but just wondering if I should keep in mind any bad areas nearby or anything cool nearby I'll want to be sure to check out.
Thanks!!!

Oh. That hotel is in Venice.
In Rome, we're doing Hotel Millenium. It looks cute, too. Any ideas on distance or anything I should keep in mind??? Thanks!!!

Well, the hotel looks nice enough, but for the money you are paying there are loads of others I would have chosen. It is a bit 'out' from the main tourist sites and will just about necessitate taking some sort of public transportation. Likewise, it is in much more of a residential/business area than a club/party/tourist area. Just be prepared to pay for transportation, be it cab, bus or even metro...although the metro is not 'right around the corner'!

I agree with Dustoffmom about Hotel Millennium. It's not my ideal location. That said, I did meet some tourists in Rome who stayed very near to there, and they were quite happy. If you do want to take the metro, which is likely a good idea, take into account the closing hours. Also research the buses ahead of time.
Hotel San Gallo in Venice should be fine. My only caveat is that, given its very central location, when it comes to meals you might want to move "off the beaten track" a bit to get cheaper, better food.

And especially in Venice...if there is a huge menu posted outside listing the fare in several different languages....walk on! The food will be horrid and even more horribly overpriced! It's what we can call a 'tourist trap'!

Oh...and a fav moderately priced restaurant of mine in Rome is L'Archetto. It's right at the Cavour metro stop...open all day, terrific food and great service. Let me know if you want more details. You'll fight the locals to get a seat!

Awesome. Thanks for the restaurant info. I'm downloading reviews off the net from travel guides on cheap places and good local food. Mainly I want the good local food! So Millenium sucks, huh? Grr. Stupid expedia.com I'll be sure to ask the concierge/ desk person/ random bellboy (anyone that can suffer through my terribly broken attempt at Italian or knows English) where the good little local spots are.

Not saying at all that it 'sucks'....just that it is not really centrally located at all and there are many others in your price range that might have been a better choice.
