I would suggest Chez Patrick hostel. I haven´t stayed there but heard some good things about it. In any case, whatever you do, DO NOT stay at the Faubourg Montmartre...it´s a dump and I can vouche for that one.
Cheers, Char.

I can't remember your trip details, but if you are travelling with others then there are lots of cheap budget hotels. You can just wander around and ask for prices/availability as you go. I had met some other travellers on the night train from Cerbere to Nice. 4 of us had no place to stay and we easily found a cheap hotel room with 4 single beds and our own bathroom (and cute little dogs in the lobby). We ended up spending less than a bunkbed in a hostel. This wouldn't work so much if you are by yourself as the single room prices tend to be much more.

thanks for the advice... i'm travelling with 1 other person but where possible we'd like to have things booked in advance so we're not hauling our packs all over. chez patrick looks like a good possiblity but reception seems to be closed from 12-5 and we're planning on arriving by train about 2:30... so i'm not sure of the implication of reception being closed and us hauling bags for hours on end...
