has anyone stayed at any budget hotels in London? Someone I work with does not want to stay at hostels and that is all I have stayed at in London. I found some that sounded okay. Anyone heard of Admiral Hotel or Chester Hotel B&B.
Any suggestions or comments are welcome!!!!

I have used Priceline the last few times in London, and had several different hotels, all of which were pleasant. Most recently, some people have been getting the Thistle Marble Arch (a 4* hotel) for bids of $55 - 60 USD per night, plus taxes and fees. Of course no result is guaranteed. Check www.betterbidding.com for tips. If you do decide to go with Priceline, read up very carefully, because there are various pitfalls.

Try the Allansdale Hotel. Some friends stayed there recently, and loved it. Great location, very near Hyde Park in the Paddington area. Double room was 65 euros/nt, which to me is very budget for London if you want somewhere clean, safe, and well located.

Paddington/Bayswater are full of cheap, if slightly dodgy hotels. They are also pretty central as well.
WillTravel - that rate seems pretty damn low. I guess it's per person (2 share)? Otherwise it's an incredible bargain.

Can I chime in though and say...being a basically non-hostel person and needing a 'door' to close at night ...I have stayed in loads of seemingly 'dodgy' hotels with perfectly great results! It may not be any where near 5 stars, but if it is clean and relatively secure...and still cheap why not? Maybe I've been lucky, but my experience says don't discount a place just due to the neighborhood or exterior impression. Some end up cheaper than hostels and a much better night's rest overall. All the above negated if speaking of a 'cheap' hotel in Penzance however!!!! That night could have scared anyone off travel forever!

ICAM Ging... I am not a hostel person either, and have stayed at many budget hotels... some better than others, but for me still better than a hostel. I just can't sleep in a room with strangers, and like to be able to lock my door and leave my things inside the room and in the bathroom. As for the Allansdale, it is far from dodgy. My friends are quite discriminating, and simply raved about how clean and pretty it was, how friendly the staff were, the nice breakfast, etc. One way I check out hotels before booking is to look them up at: www.tripadvisor.comThey have never steered me wrong yet! AMEN sister! I am a huge fan of tripadvisor! I know WT likes them as well. They are not a 'hostel' review place folks, they do cities, hotels, tours, etc but like Maricat they have never steered me wrong either. If you are looking for info on this or that tour, a cheap but good budget hotel, this is a great site to check out. If you are looking for hostels....stick with the reviews right here on Kim's site!
Ammended to say that the 'bulk' of tripadvisor's reviews are for places way out of most of our range...but they do a terrific job with 'budget' spots as well and for the real low down on tours of any kind they are hard to beat.

;D And I am fairly easy going and can sleep most anywhere.....as long as I have a door to lock at night!

Just saw this again. MR, my rate is total for two people. It is a really low rate, which is what you get with Priceline. The Thistle Marble Arch, which is a 4* hotel, has been coming up for the past few months for prices as low as $54 USD + taxes and fees. I wouldn't consider anything else for London if there are two people.
Re the dodgy hotels, some cities seem to be worse than others for this. Amsterdam seems to be on the bottom of the heap, for budget hotels. Rome seems to have a lot of bad places too. But TripAdvisor will usually warn you of the most horrid places.

I've booked the Fairway Hotel for a few nights in London in September, after it was recommended to me by my aunt and uncle, who stayed there last year and really liked it. It's right by King's Cross and the British Museum, and it's supposed to be really clean and friendly. And best of all, it's only around 42 pounds a night for a double room with shared bath.
