Hi everyone,
I am having some trouble deciding where to stay in Rome mainly because of security concerns. My two options are a budget hotel right near the termini (a bit north on Via Milazzo) or a small B&B near Piazza Vittorio. I have read that the area south of the Termini can be sketchy at night. Does this include Piazza vittorio, which was described as an "ethnic" neighborhood)? Also, how safe is it to stay so close to the train station?
Thanks!!!

JZ, are you open to staying in Hostels as well? The Beehive is close to Termini Station, and this generally gets very good ratings from guests. I believe they have some private rooms available as well. The Hostel has American owners, and this seems to one of the more popular spots in Rome. They would certainly be well qualified to advise you on "security concerns" (not sure what you meant by that?). For further information, check www.the-beehive.com - they also have a very good FAQ which is downloadable on a PDF document. It's kind of "hidden" in the website but has lots of great information for visitors. If you will only consider Hotels or B&B's, I'll have to do some checking. Hopefully some of the other regulars here will have some suggestions also. Hope this helps. Cheers!!!

I stayed 2 streets south of termini and neither myself or my wife had any problems. I'd read in lonely planet that the area was supposed to be sketchy but we found it to be fine.

We also stayed near Termini and didn't find it bad. You just have to use common sense, like you would in any unfamiliar area anyway.
Definately look into Eagle's suggestion of the Beehive - very popular and well-known for being a great hostel.

Likewise....a single middle aged woman stayed 3 blocks from termini and had nary a problem, either early a.m. or later at night. Use your common sense.

I stayed a couple blocks north of Termini at Alessandro's Palace and had a great time. The area seemed pretty safe and the hostel is really great. I would definitely recommend it!

Just another person chiming in to say that they had no problem staying south of Termini (or north of Termini for that matter). We were usually out till around midnight or so, and there were always loads of people around.
