hostels/hotels around the black forest

Hey, I'm going backpacking next summer and was hoping to spend a day hiking around some of the black forest. I read somewhere that freiburg is considered the "mouth of the forest" so should I be looking for a place there to spend the night? Or would it be better (by which I mean closer) if I stayed somewhere else?
