What's the best marijuana-free hostel in Amsterdam? I'd still like to stay in a place with a lot of young people that is close to the wild nightlife downtown (still a big drinker/partier, just no weed), but am just looking to avoid a place that is a big smokehouse. Thanks!

Hey Jeff.. I'm planning a trip as well... but you can click above on "Hostel Booking"... and you can select which country\city... the very first hostel listed in Amsterdam declares it to be a non-smoking hostel... I assume that means both cigarettes and weed. Make sure to check all of them, as some will be closer to the sites than others... If the hostel IS non-smoking, they will say so in the list of ammenities on the right hand side of the screen..
Good luck!!

I think the StayOkay are non-pot hostels. Not really party places, per the reviews.
The Shelter hostels are also non-pot. These definitely aren't party places, given the reviews.

The shelter is deff not a party hostel. I met two girls that were staying there while in Amsterdam, this place has a curfew also and they don't look on you kindly if they suspect you are drunk or high. It is right in the middle of the red light district though so you are in the thick of things. As far as avoiding a smokehouse, even the hostels that permit smoking do so in a designated area, not everywhere! I think it will be hard to find a party hostel that at the same time does not permit smoking... I myself am not a smoker per se and I stayed at anna hostel which is a very basic hostel, they really have no common area so most people don't smoke in there , rather they just go outside somehwere to smoke and then only come back in to sleep as there is literally no room to hang out. I think this hostel changed their name, in fact i'm pretty sure cuz when I was there they took their sign down so for a while the poor travelers had no way of knowing where this place was, lol!

Thanks.. I looked into it and I think they changed their name to the Aivengo Youth Hostel. That seems like the kind of place we're looking for. Having some trouble getting online booking there, but I'll try to figure it out. Thanks for the advice!

It is right in the middle of the red light district though so you are in the thick of things. That's the Shelter City hostel. There's also the Shelter Jordan hostel which is a bit further out, but in a neighborhood with a very nice ambience. But I'm sure the same applies to both of them.

yes that is the place, lol i had forgotten the weird decor!! be aware though, like I said that this place is very basic, just a room to put your head down and in a large dorm so if you are a light sleeper it's a no go. Also the guy at the front desk is friendly but very strange! He will also come in to the rooms in the morning and turn on all the lights which is very annoying if you are still sleepy I myself had an ok time at this place and met nice people but sometimes I wished the place had a common room to just sit and chill.

Jeff,
You might just have to call Aivengo, I don't think they have online booking.

Thanks. How would you go about calling internationally like that? I've never done it Do you just put the country code in front of the number and go?

Jeff, from USA, the overseas dialing code is 011 + country code + area code + local number. if you want to use a dial around to get cheaper long distance rates (1016868, for example) that number goes before the 011. Thanks. How would you go about calling internationally like that? I've never done it Do you just put the country code in front of the number and go?

Ok... let's talk about smoking... And I'm not talking weed... just... cigarettes... I know how prices of cigs have skyrocketed around the US (like in NYC, and LA)... thankfully, prices aren't too horrible in Orlando... My question is... how are things in Europe... Any heads up on prices and overall smoking etiquitte would be GREATLY appreciated... Thanks a ton!!

patrickt - in terms of prices for the UK you're looking at £4.50-5 per 20.
As for etiquette, you really can't generalise. What's fine in Greece (high number of smokers) may be a criminal act in other countries (Ireland, Norway to mention two), or may be a social faux pas in others (UK).
Generally though, if you're with a group of non smokers then ask before you do anything. That way you keep everyone happy.
