Okay....I'm doing some research about various hostels availible in the areas I will be visiting. Needing some reviews from people who have stayed in any of these hostels:
Rome:The Beehive, Carlito's Way
Florence: Luna Rosa
Venice: Ostello Santa Fosca
Cinque Terre: Gianni Franzi
Paris: Peace and Love, Hostel Rivoli
Munich: Easy Palace, YH Munich, Wombats
Barcelona: Centric Point, Sant Jordi Arago
I don't want a "party hostel" so keep that in mind!

the Beehive is Rome is good. also in Florence is Archi Rossi, where i stayed, www.hostelarchirossi.com/Venice: Ostello Santa Fosca - this place has a crazy reservations system: no reservations taken until 3 days before you get there. so, when i lost track of time/date in CT, i missed the day to call and ended up with just 1 night in Venice!
avoid the one in Riomaggiore called Cinque Terre Holidays like the plague! www.torrettas.com/ looks good in CT. i think Kim stayed there.
never been to Paris.
stayed in an HI in Munich, didn't know about other kinds of hostels when i needed a hostel there (it's been a while).
Kabul is the hostel in Barcelona where i stayed. good location.

The only hostel I know personally is wombat's in munich and I highly recommend it. I have heard mixed review about peace and love hostel in paris from other travelers

rome : beehive gets a big thumbs up from me
florence: archi rossi also gets a big thumbs up from me
venice : santa fosca is clean but basic. it does have a strange reservation system. i was there in septmber. its actually 7 days in advance. and only call after 4 pm or something. their offices are clsoed in the afternoon. but it was really cheap for students... 17 euros. so well worth it for me. but no breakfast and no common area. there's a grocery store very near so we just bought oj and croissants for breakfast.
paris: le village. its social but not party.

When I was in Barcelona I didn't stay in any of those hostels, I stayed at the Ithaca hostel. If I recall correctly it was 17 euro/night and it was very clean. I would definitely recommend it. It is right off La Rambla, which is really touristy (as in lots of pedestrian shopping) with some rumors of theft, but the central location made it easy to get to everywhere I wanted to go. Also the staff were really helpful.

Kabul youth Hostel in Barcelona was quite the party scene - a great time but if you're looking for something quiet probably not the best place (there is a bar in the common room). However they do feed you two meals a day so that's nice.
In Barcelona I stayed in a place for just one night called Barcelona Youth Hostel Mar. It was really nice and clean and had a pretty decent breakfast (mostly because you could take as much as you wanted). Quietr than Kabul.

morgan, I'm not familiar with Gianni Franzi in the Cinque Terre (which of the five towns is that located in)? You might have a look at www.hostel5terre.com/index.html (located in Manarola) to see if this might be suitable for you. Happy travels!!!

also in Florence is Archi Rossi, where i stayed, www.hostelarchirossi.com/Venice: Ostello Santa Fosca - this place has a crazy reservations system: forgot, Archi Rossi has an odd reservation system, too. they don't have one at all! it's strictly first come, first served. you have to get there early to get a bed. took an early train from Sienna so i could get there early. as it was, there were still sleepy guests coming down the stairs to get a bed for the next night when i got there.
why are all these crazy reservation systems in Italy?

I was reading that Archi Rossi now does allow prebooking. That's good news for lots of people who want to be assured of a good hostel with a good breakfast in Florence.

i think Archi Rossi is the hostel where i saw the strangest thing: there was a bidet is the dorm room! and, it was a unisex dorm. . . not sure who they expected to wash their privates in such a public place!

archi rossi does take reservations but only on their website. you can't do it through hostel world or anything.

Is it better to reserve with the website of the hostel or with a website like hostel world? (In general, not just for archi rossi)

Check the prices through both - sometimes one is cheaper than another. You'd think the hostel site would be the cheapest but that's not always the case.
Oh and you can use the "Hostel Booking" button above - it's through Hostelworld but supports this site as I get a small commission when people use the GFE version.

Okay thanks guys!
Revised Hostel Plan:
Rome: The Beehive Far away from the Campo de' Fiori where I was planning on walking to every morning to gather my picnic lunch, but the place looks really nice, American owners, cheap and really good reviews. Any suggestions on another market that is nearby?
Florence: Archi Rossi? Haven't yet figured out how centrally located it is. That would be a big deciding factor.
Venice: Ostello Santa Fosca I'm pretty definite on this one. Really centrally located, good price, the rooms look nice...anybody with more comments on this I'm open to more tips.
Munich: Wombats Still looks like a great place!
Paris: Le Village Like it still. But it seems like its far away from everything I want to see, might be an issue. Any markets nearby?
Barcelona: Ithaca I like this one. I've also heard about some cheap pensions also around the Ramblas. Looking into that. Some were like the same price as a hostel bed.
Cinque Terre:? Still don't know. I want to know how far away the little cities are from one another. And, which city is the one that is in all the pictures? You know, with all the colorful houses stacked close together and a little port underneath. It seems like they have that place pictured when talking about Vernazza, Riomaggiore, Manarola....they can't all be that place can they?
