There seems to be a lot of hostels in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris. Just how far is that from the downtown area? Is there stuff to do there at night (nothing crazy or a total party scene, but social nonetheless) or would we just be trucking into the downtown area every night? Any recommendations for good Paris hostels for those who like to have a good time, but don’t like to stay up until all hours of the night?

You can get either nice or seedy in Montmartre - it can vary street by street. If CuriousToronto pops in again, she could advise best. But one thing to consider as another possibility is the Montparnasse area. This is definitely not seedy, and has many budget hotel options (but not hostels, I don't think).
I have heard Le Village in Montmartre is good both for sociability and sleep.

Stay away from Friends hostel. I think that's its name.
I wouldn't stay in Montmartre...it's very pretty up on the hill but the hostels are pretty seedy, and really Montmartre is not very close to the main sights.
The Latin Quarter is a great place - and I reccommend Young and Happy hostel (for the second time today!). We actually walked from Young and Happy to Notre Dame etc...even to the Eiffel tower. Walking to Notre Dame took maybe 20 minutes (in the snow :-D ), and the tower took quite a bit longer but it's a nice walk. The hostel is also pretty close to the Jardin du Luxembourg (bad spelling) which are gorgeous...albeit closed up when we were there :-)
