My friend and I are headed to Europe this summer, we'll hit some of the big cities, but hope to do some traveling out in the country to some of the smaller towns. We're not bringing tents, but will have a tarp and a sheet. Our idea is to try and sleep out in the country as often as we can. Just lay out our tarps and sleep for the night. Is this a realistic idea? In America I know I can get away with it, but I'm wondering how things are over there. Thanks.

It's not the best idea in the World. I'm not sure where you're going etc, but vagrancy isn't looked on too kindly by a lot of countries (sleeping in airports/train stations before your flight etc is an exception). Also, where could you sleep? Most land is privately owned, so you'd be trespassing, nor can you sleep in public places etc.
It sounds like a good idea in theory, but in practice the reality will probably be quite different.

If you are fetching a tarp and a sheet you might as well subsitute this for a tent. You can get some compact hiking tents that would take up less room than a tarp. If you stay in a tent even if you are not on an 'official' campsite it may be looked upon more favorable than just a tarp. As Muvver said it depend on the countries you are going to. My Mam has got away with it loads of times in Scotland but not sure about other countries attitudes.
