... and perhaps I shouldn't be posting this, but maybe some of you have been to South Africa? (And it does have to do with the World Cup? ) It's a long way from now... but I'm set on going to South Africa for the World Cup in 2010. Hostels seem like the way to go - especially since flying to South Africa will cost an arm and a leg by itself. However, I've had a few people advise me not to go cheap and stay in an actual Hotel because it's "not safe". Yet, these people have never been to South Africa themselves, so I'd really appreciate any feedback from people who have actually been there... if there are any on an European forum. Thank you!

You should probably do some research and see. I know some that have gone and most agree that it depends on when/where you go. Sometimes they felt fine and other times they didn't feel all that safe. However, I know the country is making a big push to improve itself before the WC so I assume things will likely be even better by then.
Not much help as I've never been, but you should definitely search around before investing time and money into it.

Thanks for the reply. I've done a little research and it doesn't seem to be all that dangerous... from what I've read, it's the nights that are the problem. During the daytime it's not so bad. Perhaps I should look into going to the Euros instead, lol. ;D

Yeh, I would've loved to see the WC in Germany and am planning a trip to see a bit of Euro 2008 rather than WC 2010. It's not totally that I'm unsure of how safe it would be but I just can't convince myself it would be worth it. I have very little interest in seeing South Africa and can't see myself enjoying the time between games. I doubt the cities are the kind I'd like to explore and the sheer cost would likely ruin it for me. Germany would've been perfect because it's a country worth exploring and it connects to Europe easily, but once you're in South Africa you're stuck there and I'm not sure how enjoyable it would be on non-game days.

i have meet some people from south africa, and they said its only unsafe at some bad areas at night, especally if you look like some who has money (cellphone, large suitcase, expensive and clean clothes - so try to look poor if you park your avis-rentacar bmw in south africa).
at the moment they have more kills in cape town than in any other city worldwide.

Commie - I thought Jo'burg was a lot rougher than Cape Town? I know a couple of guys from there and they always say that it's not as bad as Jo'burg or Durban.
But yeah, stick to decent, pro tourist areas and you'll be fine. It's pretty similar to the United States, or even any other Western country in that respect.

Yeah I can see how some people might not be entirely interested in visiting Africa... however I'd love to. Europe is by far the best place, but I'd love to see all parts of the world... so I guess I figure what better time to visit South Africa than a World Cup year! They have beautiful beaches and quite an interesting culture... so I think I could keep myself quite entertained between games. However, the cost is very high... so at the moment, the Euros look like a much more logical choice for me. I suppose there's still quite some time to decide though...
