20 January Salzburg, Austria
Hello all, Salzburg is achingly beautiful! Nestled in the alps, with more churches per square mile than you could imagine, a high fortress\castle overlooking it all.....aahhh.
Did the 'tourist' thing today and took the 'sound of music' tour. What fun! Went to all the places they shot the exteriors at, and it afforded an opportunity to get out of the city into the mountains and see some terrific scenery. Well worth the money, just for the views. The alps here are quite majestic, and of course now all is covered with snow, so add that to the beauty of the place. The old town is again a baroque visual delight, full of winding streets, old alleyways, huge squares and all dominated by the archbishops residence. Stunning.
Mozart was born here, I visited the house where he was born as well as his later residences. Not that great actually, just basically bare rooms with displays of his sheet music.....glad I went but not the highlight. The highlight will remain the scenery and the city itself. There is no doubt that this will remain a favorite spot for years to come.
Off to Italy tomorrow......as always, hope all are well. I am pressed for time this evening, but will try to remember to post a bit more later on this fabulous place! A real must see for any trip to Europe!
