Hi everyone....I'm planning four weeks of travel in the spring and i expect i'll stay in hostels as much as possible. are there any membership type things that would be benificial for me to get before i go? (I've seen stuff about hostel international members etc but wasn't sure exactly how to go about getting that or if it was necessary)

IMHO, it's a waste of money getting a HI affilated card. Odds are you'll only end up at one or two HI-affilated hostel (in most cases, none) and you'll most likely lose some money in the end if you do get the card. You're better off going without a card

Whether or not to travel with an HI Membership will depend to a large extent on what types of Hostels you will primarily be staying in. If most of your Hostels will be HI affiliates, then having a membership card is a good idea, and in some cases essential. At one of the HI Hostels I stayed in Switzerland, a membership number was required when making the reservation, so a membership was necessary.
Another thing to consider is that if you're travelling in "peak season" and rooms are at a premium, the person having the membership will be more likely to get "short notice openings" over the non-member.
I often stay in HI Hostels when not using budget Hotels, and therefore I usually have a current HI Membership. In my experience, their facilities are fairly consistent and well run.
Happy travels!!!
