cableguy, if you could list the places you were thinking of next to each destination it might be helpful (rather than repeating ourselves from other posts). As you leave at the end of April, it would be good to get them booked now.

i would strongly advise you to reverse Cinque Terre and Venice in your plan. CT is Northwest to Florence, just north of Pisa. Venice is way North*East* of Florence. it'd be significant backtracking to go from Florence to Venice to CT, then back North to Switzerland. - d rome florence vencie cinque terre gimmel wald

I think David was suggesting to simply change the order of Florence and Venice in your trip so it is:
Rome, Venice, Florence, CT, Gimmelwald
You can then still go by train from CT to Milan to Gimmelwald as planned.
Now, the hostel list of places you're considering...?

i think the change of plan that David proposed makes absolutely a lot of sense - even more if afterwards you plan to go to switzerland from milan, which is way up north from Cinqueterre.

Also the possibility of having something stolen, although rare. I think it also depends on your age. When I first started traveling, I was a lot younger, and did'nt realize the piece of mind in having your own room. So I having done it all, ways would strongly recommend getting a b&b or zimmer etc. in any place you go. They are'nt that much more than a hostel and you get a better nights sleep, don't have to worry about your things, and the room almost comes with breakfast. Sometimes a low cost evening meal is often offered. WT
