Hey, I am a grad student in the States doing my ph.d. I plan to be in London from July 10-August 13th doing some research. I need a room to live in for about 3 weeks, so till July 31st. I have put up postings on craigslist and gumtree but have only received scams as replies that want me to western union them money ahead of time. Does anyone know of a room that is reasonably priced that I could rent for those 3 weeks? I wanted a young place where people hang out as I am only 25 and don't mind noise, just need a clean place with friendly people. So if anyone has any suggestions then let me know. Oh and I was going to stay at a hostel the first 2-3 nights just in case I didn't find a room before I left. How is St. Christopher's in Camden or St Christopher's Village? I was thinking about one of the those. Ok any help would be great!

are you connected with a uni over here? if you can get access to a uni noticeboard or someting you might find it easier to get a room
*loads* of dodgy people in the UK, especially london, so take care and good luck!

Thanks - I booked a room for 3 nights at st christopher's camden and I figure Ill try to find something while I am there. How expensive is it to travel around the UK? I am on a budget and was trying to figure out how to make it work for 5 weeks as I wanted to go somewhere in mainland Europe the last part of the trip.

If London is your base, then you will find that you will have these destinations on a budgetairline: revolutionmusic.eu/flightassistent/countries/uk/londonall.htmlA lot of the destination within the UK, are pretty cheap to fly (try Edinburgh or Glasgow), busses are also a cheap way to get around. There are hostels that you can book for a long time, so if you can't find something, you will at least have a place to stay. That said: hostels are pretty expensive in London (compared to other cities). St. Christopher's are considered pretty good hostels.

Thanks - that is a helpful link. good to hear about the st chris hostels. I have booked for 3 nights so far and got a good deal on a 10 bed mixed dorm - 20USD per night. So if I need to stay a bit longer hopefully I can still get that price

US$20 is pretty cheap for anything in London. That said, if you want your own room what about University Halls? Most London Unis rent out their accommodation in the summer for around US$200-300 a week.
