I've read a lot of posts saying that there might be a chance to better rates by booking one cheaper hotel room than paying double for dorms in hostels. My bf and I are planning to go next April-May and would be happy to share a bed if it's cheaper. But I'd like to narrow down my search if I can, so if any of you can comment on which cities I would probably be better off ignoring looking for hotels over hostels, pls let me know!
Prague Vienna Venice Florence Cinque Terra Rome Barcelona Lyon Nice Paris Reims Epernay
Thanks!

Here are the places I stayed in (all of May and the 1st week of June, 2007):
Paris - L'Appihotel - Would recommend them although they're in the rue St. Denis area which is a bit seedy but I didn't experience any problems at all. My friend and I paid $35 CAD each for a twin ensuite room. An advantage of this place is that it's in the 2e arrondissement and close to a metro station. There's no internet at the place but there's an internet cafe across the street. Clean and really tidy, albeit bathroom is small.
Rome - Beehive (Acacia Apartment) - Hands down one of the best places I've stayed in. We were in a shared apartment (3 bedrooms, one kitchen, one bathroom and one internet room) but our room was sooooo nice and had a balcony. The kitchen was always well-stocked and the bathroom is massive. It's a short 2 minute walk to Termini station and the apartment's on the 5th floor but there's an elevator which is a huge plus. We paid 75 euro altogether per night and would absolutely recommend it. We had a twin room but there was also an extra bed in our room.
Florence - B&B Maison - A really nicely decorated place. I don't remember how much we paid but I think it was $40 CAD per person at the most. We didn't have a twin room but a double so it was okay but the room was beautiful. Downside is the bathroom - it was shared but it wasn't too bad. Breakfast is included and there's a bus stop right outside the place. It was a bit far from attractions but with the bus, no problem at all. Would definitely stay here again.
Other cities - Sorry, I didn't go there. Hope it helps!
I booked through hostelworld but you could help out GuideForEurope by clicking on the link at the bottom of the forums. Only exception is that for the Beehive, I booked through their website and it's absolutely necessary to book WAY in advance!
