Hello all,
We have 2 night s after Rome and would like to see Pompeii before catching a flight out of Naples to Lonon. This is at the end of a 17 day trip so we want convenience. Would you suggest a hotel in Pompeii? Or is Sorento close enough? And how about Positano for lunch on the other day?

Mike, if you're planning to visit Positano (even just for lunch) I'd suggest staying in Sorrento as it's close enough to Pompei and to Positano (bus travel is the best way to Positano and you can take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento and Sorrento-Pompei) and its a pretty town overlooking the Bay of Naples.
There are hotels in Pompei, but I don't know that you'd like to base yourself there - there are more picturesque places on the coast to chose from. If your flight from Naples to London is an early one, I'd suggest staying in Naples (I can hear the crowd booing from here!) at least the night before to save time and hassle.

MTH has a good point. If your flight is extremely early or before noon at least, stick to Naples for both nights because it'd be a hassle to stay one night in one place then move to another hotel for another night.

Thanks for the help!! I found an apartment in Sorrento. Luckily I booked an afternoon flight out of Naples. We will put lunch in Positano on our list.
