reading this <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6100220.stm> would, perhaps, make me think twice about a Naples visit. - d

Last week it was decided that there will be a thousand policemen (and women) send to Naples, so far no troops.
The biggest problem in Naples is that the new government of Italy declared an amnesty for a lot of criminals, that were in jail for things like pickpocketing etc. In order to make room for the more serious criminals. Of course everybody knows that if you commit a small crime in Naples you will be on the streets just a few hours, or in the worst case a few days later ... so you can imagine the result. I saw an interview with the head of the policeforce in Naples, and he was confident that it the would het in under control. but we will see.
At least it is a reason to be extra carefull in and around Naples, I don't know if it should be a reason not to go, but at least see it as a warning that you should take precautions. (moneybelt etc.)
