I though this was an interesting article: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6247573.stmAnd having been there a few years ago during an evacuation drill that was deemed successful (co-ordinating 3mil Campanese is pretty impressive!), it's interesting to note that the authorities now believe it needs reassessing.

scary stuff. not knowing much about vulcanology, but i did like Spock, i had to look up "Plinian eruption."
with 2 or 3 weeks notice, travelers should be able to be notified in time to avoid the area. but, the locals would be in awful shape.
septics, like that guy who was evacuated in 1944 and those who listen to him, might be disinclined to move out when they need to. the ramifications of not moving out could be devastating!

i had to look up "Plinian eruption." It's all about Pliny!Must remember to be the first to record something and have it named after me! Unfortunately, there's not always a lot of notice as the mountain gurgles all the time (a bit like Etna) and vulcanologists (not of the Spock kind!) aren't always heeded in their warnings.

[have i now descended into geekdom? ]
