Today was a beautiful and sunny day in Amsterdam, and much warmer. We wandered around and visited a few more museums: The Amsterdam Historical Museum, the Dutch Resistance Museum, and the Jewish Museum. All very interesting, but we have sore feet and short attention spans already, so I'm afraid that we didn't give the museums what they were worth in time.
Last night we tried to take a candle light cheese and wine canal tour, but they don't run every night off season. This is probably the biggest drawback to travelling in the off season (along with the weather), but I think it's worth it because you have the place to yourself, and you get to see, hear, and interact with (friendlier!) locals more. This afternoon we took a regular canal tour which was much better than I had heard; maybe we enjoyed it so much because we got to rest our toes and sit in a glass-covered, sun-filled boat!
We have died and gone to culinary heaven! We just had dinner in the oldest building in Amsterdam. It used to be one of the city gates, and it's lit inside by hundreds of candles. I had a vegetable lasagna with yellow pepper coulis, and Jamie had filet mignon that was fantastic. Then we tried the creme brulee with blueberry sorbet... we will be thinking about this meal for a long time! We never splurge for gourmet food, so it was definitely worth it!! I am starting to wonder if the truth to my obsession with Europe is directly related to the wonderful food... I can feel my waistline growing with every bite of stroopwafel!!
We have really enjoyed our time in Amsterdam, but we are looking forward to our next stop, Bruges (which is a small town), and hoping to slow down a little bit. I promised Jamie this would be a relaxing vacation; I didn't mean to lie! Neither of us can choose a "favorite" here in Amsterdam; the Anne Frank House was very moving.
Out of internet time!
