I recall that Alitalia is also in the midst of some kind of "buyout" or something right now also. What is happening with the European airlines???

I recall that Alitalia is also in the midst of some kind of "buyout" or something right now also. What is happening with the European airlines??? The competition is huge, and only the big seem to survive. First you have seen the coalitions being made (OneWorld, Star Alliance and the one with AirFrance, KLM, NorthWest), to be more costeffective. But that just doesn't seem to be enough, and now they want to grow as a company. And I am not really sure, but I think that Iberia is a state-owned company and the government wants to sell the airline, and let it become a private enterprise (or at least it share in the company) But also an airline like Air Berlin is expanding in the budgetmarket. They have already bought Hapag and LTU. And is now the biggest of the budgetairlines in Europe.

And is now the biggest of the budgetairlines in Europe. recently read that Air Berlin plans to buy 787s to expand into longer haul routes. Air Berlin has ordered 25 of the new Boeings, with another 25 being possible. in the meantime, Southwest isn't permitted to make longhaul domestic flights from it's homebase until 2014!
