news of smoking bans in Europe are encouraging. several German states have sharply limited smoking. but, most astounding, France has also followed the lead! my next trip will have to include a return to France. 1st, they elect a president who actually likes America, now they catch on that smoking is actually bad for people's health! - d

People will always complain at first but it'll settle after a while. I remember when Ottawa established a smoking ban in enclosed public areas (i.e. pubs, etc), people were furious. Now that it's been in effect for a few years, everyone's adapted to it.
We have another smoking ban coming into place.... no smoking within 9 feet of OC Tranpso (our bus system) property.
With the new ban already in place in England, I'm looking forward to other countries following suit!

On the topic of smoking bans, I saw an interesting story on the Noon News today. The story described a Restaurant / Bar which is constructed half on the French side and half on the Swiss side of the border. They were wondering how to implement the smoking regulations on the French side (as Swiss regulations apparently aren't as strict yet).
The owners decided that the easiest course of action was simply to ban smoking in the entire facility. I'm sure some of their customers will be upset with the decision, but hopefully they will realize that "the writing is on the wall" and they'll have to make this adjustment eventually (probably sooner rather than later).

More good news for non-smokers: The Netherlands joined other countries (on the 1st of July) in banning smoking from bars and restaurants.

As a smoker, I couldn't give a damn. More of an inconvenience to me. Restaurants, ok. But bars? C'mon....
I'm totally okay with standing 20+ ft. away from a door where non-smokers enter/exit. No, I'm not going to blow smoke in you or your infant's face...but don't people who choose to smoke have some sort of right?
I suppose it is just me, but it really irks me when I am on campus here in Texas, minding my own business and smoking a cigarette, sitting on a random bench far away from passersby. I've literally had students walk right next to my path, give me a dirty look, and start coughing like they are smokers. Or I just love the *pheeewww...* hand wave and disgusted growl I've received before as pedestrians walk straight into my line of smoke.
This is all probably just a peeve of mine that perhaps smokers may share with me...
But I' not out to get anyone. I'm not out to give you cancer. Why do you have to make my life a living hell? I already feel guilty enough for smoking but I haven't found the right way to quit yet.
{All just an opinion from someone who already knows they are killing their lungs...just my two cents....no offense.}
