Hi everyone!
We've made it to our first foreign language speaking city - Paris! Just a quick note to let everyone know we're doing well. London was fantastic - lots of museums, walking and tube riding during our stay. Highlights include:
British Museum - lots of great history and British booty to see
Big Ben - Yep, it's big
Tower of London - Lots of history and gore wrapped up in a package by Disney! But lots of fun too.
Complete works of Shakespeare (Abridged) - Great show! Very funny and very american... well, the three actors were american. Lots of fun had by all.
Victoria and Albert Museum - Impressive pile of junk. Really! Plaster casts of different David statues, great Art Deco exhibit, and kid fun in the British Galleries (ok, kid and Rob and Mari fun in the exhibits - we did more than the kids!)
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - I made Rob go to this show - I wanted to see the car fly.
We'll miss being in Britain, but Paris has treated us really well so far. The owner of our hotel is very nice, people aren't rude (I've heard more "pardon"s and "merci"s than I would hear the equivalent in any big city elsewhere) and food can be pretty cheap (we had a three course lunch today for $10 each.) Couple of weird things that have happened -
We were on the metro on our way to our hotel when a gaggle of girls run on our metro, followed by a yelling man, who thrust his fingers through the door and managed to pry them open. He then activated the emergency brake and started yelling at the girls and forced them off the train. We watched in confusion as he then made two japanese tourists come off the train too. Our metro was stopped for quite a bit until someone released the brake. As far as we could tell, the guy was a policeman and that's about it... quite a shocking welcome to the city.
Near Notre Dame, we passed about 40 policemen in riot gear surrounding a tiny group of protestors. Hmmm... seemed to be overreacting ever so slightly...
Miss all of you... again thanks for the emails and thanks to Mama for all the web site work (yes, every time I'm going to give a plug for the website. Check it out! No one at work will know!): homepage.mac.com/maritsurimoto
Love, Mari and Rob
