digital or film? Point and shoot or 35mm? When are you leaving again? How much time and bucks do you want to invest? I can suggest several great books that will offer loads of practical help...you can get them at the library!

Lets see, Film because I love the nostalgic/non technologicalness of it (i get enuf gagets and gizmos from work) "Point and shoot or 35mm?" To be honest I dont know waht that means lol. Im leaving in April of 2005 so I have some time left. And over all investment I think a decent price but I dont want to spend 1 or 2 thousand bucks just for a camera but If I find out I like it I wouldnt have a problem spending a few hundred bucks on a nice one. What suggestions do you have?

Well you could take an intro photo class at a local college. I think it would be very practical and beneficial since you will probably use a manual 35mm single lens reflex camera, using a camera of this type will let you learn the basics of photography. A class like this will also show you differents ways to compose pictures and you will probably have critiques where you can view other students work. Since you have until April 2005, I would suggest getting a used Nikon FE series camera. They go for about $150. It is a pretty rugged all manual 35mm SLR that will probably outlast you. If you want something more modern I would suggest a Nikon N80 Auto SLR for about $350 to $500 depending on what lense comes with it. A good book to pick up is TEXTPhotographyTEXT by London, Upton, Kobre, and Brill.
