i've heard from a friend that memory cards can be purchased pretty cheap in amsterdam...can anyone verify this? i think i have enough memory to get me through the first leg of my trip, but if i can get another card in amsterdam for less $$ than if i were to buy it before i leave, that's what i'll plan on. i know there are always other routes to get the pics off the cards, but i was just curious if anyone knows if this is true or not. thanks!

I've never heard of that, it may be a specific shop or something though. Normally for cheap electronics stuff the best places are tax havens such as Andorra, Gibraltar etc or the far east. Most memory cards in Europe will be around £30/€42 ish for 256mb of compact flash, I doubt you'll get any cheaper in an EU country.

Keep an eye out for weekly flyers etc.. I found a 256 meg SD card for 79.99 bucks from Future shop here in canada. I've also bought from tigerdirect.ca you can find some good deals if you look for them.

Costco.......$75 for a 256MB. They'll even take it back after your trip if you have your receipt. Whoops.....did I say that?

Man, that sucks, oh well, at the time where I bought it, that was the price!
How do you carry your extra cards around not to "hurt" them?

JENNIFER, with regard to your question on how to carry Cards without "hurting" them, I bought a small padded metal case at our local London Drugs Photo shop for this purpose. It holds four Compact Flash Cards quite securely and safely. They had models available for other Card formats as well. It's very robust and unless it was run over by a Tank, it should keep the Cards safe.
Cheers!!!

Well, as I don't plan to be run over by a tank, I should be ok!
Now, one more "dumb" question from my totally unknowledgable computer self, are these cards sensitive to xrays?
Me again with my questions... heheh

As far as I know, the Cards are not affected by X-Rays (as 35mm Film is). I'm not sure about the affect of strong magnetic fields, but I suspect they're OK with these as well.
If I find anything more definite on this, I'll post another note.

X-Rays will not affect memory cards, as they are flash cards. STRONG magnetic fields can cause data loss, of a lower power field that is close (i.e. those wand things security uses to check you for metal objects), so don't carry any of the camera or cards in your pockets when your getting on the plane!
