It's my 4th day in Europe...
My major objective in my visit to Zagreb is meeting my relatives, whom I never met, and visit places of my mother's childhood. So yesterday we went to a village about an hour away from Zagreb to lunch at Pepica's family - her mother and sister... they grow pigs and chicken and guess what was the menu... (Kosher observers would excuse me...)
Today I took a bus to Loborgrad, about 1.5 hour ride north of Zagreb. Loborgrad, as I found out, is a castle (or a manor, rather) that during the holocaust was a concentration camp for women. My grandmother Greta (mother's mother) was held there, and later was sent to die in Auschwitz.
The place is now a psychiatric hospital, but fortunately, I found one doctor who speak English who was very kind and explained me about the place, and even drived me after that to Zlatar, a nearby town. It didn't help much, as I had to wait there 2 hours for the bus to Zagreb...
Also, I visited the houses of My mother's parents and grandparents in Zagreb... I have no idea who lives there now...
Also went to Mirogoj, the cemetary of Zagreb, which is very nice, if you can say that about a cemetary... It serves all religions, and you can find Jewish graves beside Christians...
And besides that, I have seen all the tourist sites of Zagreb, which frankly, isn't much to say about...
The best thing to do, If you visit Zagreb, is to take the leaflet "city walks" and follow the route... there are two walks, one in the so-called upper city and one in the lower city. The upper city is the older part of Zagreb, with cobbled stone streets, and historic monuments - the cathedral and some other churches, parliament, president's house etc. The lower city dates back to the 19th century, and is a string of parks, museums and cultural institutions.
I have to stop now, because I said I'll be back at 4PM and I'm already late...
