Do they allow you to download software to their computer for the purpose of downloading pictures? I will need to do this throughout my 3 mo trip and also to send pic's home every so often. btw...webshots.com is great!

I'm rather new to digital camera-ware, so then I just take my camera to a photo shop and wait while they do it? Do you know if this is expensive?? Is this what most people do who take a digital camera? thanks for all the help!

To answer some of your questions, I doubt very much whether you would be allowed to download software to the PC's at Internet Cafes. In addition to the possibility that viruses or other "malware" might be downloaded, there's also the problem of the variety of OS's that you will find. Some PC's at Cafes are various versions of Windows, while some are MAC's. Not a good plan.
Another significant problem is the time factor in downloading large files (ie: 5 MB per photo in some cases). You could spend considerable time and money at Internet Cafes if you chose this method of transferring photos.
If you want to travel light, your best bet would be to have your images "burned" to CD at a photo shop while you're travelling. Some people like to get two copies burned, mailing one home and keeping the other with them. That way you've always got a "backup" in case you lose one CD. I've never used that kind of service, so can't comment on how much the cost would be?
Some other options frequently used by people travelling with Digital Cameras are a portable CD Burner such as the Apacer Disk Steno or a Portable Hard Drive such as the FlashTrax or the new Epson P-2000. Which option you choose depends to some extent on your personal preferences and your budget.
Check some of the other posts on this board. There's lots of information out there, so I don't want to repeat in this Post. If you need more info, post another note.
Cheers!!!

thanks for the advice Eagle. Looks like CD burning it is. Does anyone know how much this service costs in Europe? Just want an idea of how much $$ i'm looking at, since I'll be gone for 3 mos. and plan on having lots of pic's!

JOE, one other comment. Since things can be a bit chaotic at times when you're travelling and it might take a day or two to be able to find photo shops in each location you're in, make sure you have enough memory cards. They should ideally be large enough capacity to last for a few days, until you can get CD's burned.
Sorry I don't have comments to add on cost aspect.
Cheers!!!

dumb questions...told you I was novice at this, but once I get the CD's burned will I be able to take the CD and put it in a computer (at a cafe) and send the pic's back home, or do I have to wait til I get home?

I am a film gal Joe so can't help with your other questions but I can tell you that once the CD's are burned you should easily be able to mail them home.....they should be burned with some sort of 'photoshop/imaging' program. And at least in Italy last year I saw loads of 'we burn photo/CD' signs everywhere. You should have no problem finding someplace to get that done these days.

Yep, you will be able to do this. In fact, before you erase the pictures off your card, I definately suggest making sure that everything is there.

Kim, While you were away for 7 mos. did you email pic's back home, or did you wait until you got back home to download everything? I would like to send (email) pic's home every few weeks so my family can see them while I'm still in Europe...is this possible and how would I do it, other than mailing a cd back home? thanks!

I waited as at the time I was using a film camera.
If you get them burnt on to a CD, you will be able to take them to an internet cafe and send them that way.
Or, what I would do is get an account with someone like Imageevent (see Our Photo Gallery button above) and just upload them to an online photo album that your friends and family can check. It's just I don't know what kind of camera you have but I have a digital SLR which takes massive photographs and the images you have on your CD won't be resized.
I know using Imageevent it automatically sizes them when it uploads them so if they are massive, it doesn't matter.
People can also leave you comments on your pictures, which would be fun for you to go back and read.

oh, so then I can put a CD into a computer at an internet cafe?? I thought I read on here somewhere that most places won't allow you to put anything like software, cd's etc. onto their computer. If they do, this is what I'd like to do. Thanks for the link to Imageevent ,.I will check it out! ;D

They won't let you load anything on to the computers, like programs but accessing pictures from a CD is usually no big deal - especially if you had the CD burnt from them.
