The Algarve might not be the best winter destination, but it sure is cheap. The prices are good until mid-March. I found these cheap prices on www.easyjethotels.net . For example, the Bayside Salgados offers a standard self-catering studio apartment with full amenities for 15 Euros per night, and this is good for two people. It was built in 2001 and renovated in 2003, so it's not an old dump. I don't know how easy it is to get around without a car, but if you want to live cheaply and not stay in a hostel, this is the way to go.

You're probably right, David, as I've never been there. What would you do if you were there right now?

You're probably right, David, as I've never been there. What would you do if you were there right now? since it's about almost 8 in the evening there, prolly start trying to find a good place to eat. or, if i already knew where i'd eat, i'd wander around the old town in Lagos. <it's in the mid 50's over there - in Faro, nearest place i could quickly find weather info on the web - sweater weather> take a peek into the shops i missed last time. [i'd over scheduled. bad habit of mine] relax. enjoy life. - d

That sounds good. Not every minute has to be spent in earnest exploration, for sure. Would you know anything about the towns of ALBUFEIRA, VILAMOURA, PORTIMAO, and CARVOEIRO? That's where the cheapest specials seem to be for. Are those near Lagos? (Or I guess I could look at a map ). www.easyjethotels.net/availability_hd.jsp?camp=cities

The same site has cheap apartments right in Lagos, too, although just a bit more expensive.

if Lagos is what you want to see, and i do recommend spending some time there, you should probably try to get accommodations there! if not, you'd need to factor the transportation expense of getting in to Lagos from where you're staying. also, travel time can be wasted time. and since you're paying a wad of cash just to get over there, it's not the time to be chinchy with the room budget!

Ah, it's just hypothetical at this point, but I am thinking Portugal would be a good winter destination, and I'd get to see another Latin country, which I seem to like. You're right about false economies.

also, Southern Portugal is close to Southern Spain.
Southern Spain has a very interesting Arabic influence. the Moors, who were part of the Arabic empire, occupied Andalusia (derived from the Arabic name for Spain) for 700+ years! the Portuguese had a stronger military force, were able to kick the Moors out much sooner. but the Arabic name Al-Gharb, became Algarve, stuck.
EDIT: bin-laden and his group have even said that Spain is Muslim territory, that it's their duty to drive the Christians out of Spain. they've even gone so far as to cite ending the Westphalian system, referring to the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, the start of the modern concept of Nation/State, as a Western concept contrary to Islam.

Yes, the "tragedy of Andalusia" (one alleged motivation for 9/11). I have so many hypothetical trips in my mind, but I should start to formulate something I could use next winter.

Al-Andalus is the Arabic name for Spain.

Would be just my luck to not be able to log in when I need the address!
