Hello everyone!!!
I've arrived in Europe safe and sound for my one month tour the day before yesterday. I'm in my first hotel (or hostel anyway) and it's very nice and was voted best hostel in the world several years in a row. We've been in London for almost two days and are having tons of fun. We took a double-decker bus tour and a Thames River cruise, took our photo outside a famous red telephone booth and ate in Chinatown. We also toured Westminster Abbey and probably my favorite - the Tower of London. We spent four hours in the tower, touring everything from "Traitor's gate" to the "bloody tower". The history in that place is amazing and we got a personal tour from a Yeoman Warder (the personal bodyguard of the queen). We also saw Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. And that was just yesterday!!!
Today was a bit slower paced, we slept through the alarm so we got off to a bit of a slow start. But we still managed to grab a bite at a local pattiserie and head off for the morning to the Monument of the Great Fire - which destroyed nearly 80% of London. We climbed the 311 steps to the top and looked out at the city. We also went to St. Paul's Cathedral (where princess Dianna was married and the one that Marry Poppins fed the birds at Had loads of fun but the steps up to the top (300 some) went a bit slower than the morning.
We also just met our second roommate! Our first one didn't work out so well as Nicole and I walked in on her dancing naked in the room - what a first impression. She's a long-termer and didn't really want roommates so she asked if we could move. Since we didn't really want to stay with crazy girl, we did! Last night we were by ourselves but today we met our next roommate from Colorado - who seems much more normal. Nicole and I are off to see Chicago tonight at 8. We're sitting in row 14 so hopefully it'll be a good show.
Anyway - I've gone on long enough but feel free to email! This hostel has email for ? <symbol didn't show up on email> for an hour - so I've checked it more recently. London is so expensive, that's about the cheapest I've found. Who knows about the next one though - the 7th we're off for Scotland!!!
Added note for message board members:
Oh, one more note for you (or anyone else travelling to London). We're in the Picadilly Hotel (hostel) right now and are having a great time. This is our first experience with a hostel so I can't really compare the situation - but everyone here says it's the nicest one they've stayed in - but a bit expensive. For London though - it's not bad. The only complaint I have is that there are sinks in our room, but no water. Other than that - it's great!
