Greetings and salutations!
We've made it out of the heat of Rome and now we're in the Netherlands. We actually flew to Brussels and spent a few days in Bruges, Belgium. What a great little town! I had heard about all the tourists, and hey were there, but the surrounding countryside is ncredibly beautiful and we spent the majority of our time biking around Bruges. We were very sad to leave.
We're having a fine time in the Netherlands too. Pretty much the theme of this section of the trip is "Architecture". We're staying in Utrecht, made aytrips to Rotterdam and Delft, going to The Hague today and saving Amsterdam for tomorrow. Rob's been enjoying seeing all the Dutch architecture and we've seen a lot of Rem Koolhaus stuff.
Ok, so a little story... one of the great things about travelling is the seredipitous things that can happen. Rob's favorite band is R.E.M. (no relation to Rem Koolhaus). A friend of his emailed him to let him know that they were playing a few Europe dates, so Rob tried to get tickets for Utrecht or Amsterdam. Alas, they were sold out. So last night we went to the theater to buy tickets, got them from a scalper, and went into the show. To Rob's surprise, the theater as tiny! Not even a theater, more of a club, smaller than the 9:30 club or the Mayan Theater (DC and LA references). So, we got to see R.E.M. with a bunch of Dutch people (who are surprisingly very tall) in a small, small venue. It was a special show to kick off their 2003 tour. And yes, Rob took some photos.
I think one of the funniest parts of our travelling is the music we hear. There is so much American pop music playing where ever we are. And it's so random on the radio! Eminem will be followed by REO speedwagon and then disco then rap then some song that no one's heard since 1974. And in Bruges, someone was playing a song from Dirty Dancing over ... and over...and over.... at 10:00 at night... could have been a class... but I think they just loved the song.
Ok, a comment about the hostel we're staying at. It's by far the most unorganized place we've stayed at, but it also has the most facilities. Free internet on 8 Imacs, two PC's with huge screens, free food 24/7 (you just have to cook it) a piano, drum set, clarinet, 10 guitars, DVD player, we have a tv in our room... and 8 bunk beds to ourselves... It's surreal. We're enjoying the chaos of the place.
We hope everyone's doing well. Our next stop will be
Germany!
Love, Mari and Rob
