Hello! The first time I went to Europe I was in high school and traveling with a tour group, this time I am backpacking I can't wait! I leave March 25th from Los Angeles arriving in London. I fly home from London on April 15th.... I need Help!! I can't decide how to make all of this work, as I haven't done it before. I want to touch London, Paris, Provence, Rome, Venice, possibly Florence, maybe Madrid and/or ?? What do you recommend? How many days in each city? And transportation? Flying, buses, trains..... Sorry, I just get so confused reading all the different posts and information sites...I feel like I can't even make up my own mind now! Thank you for your recommendations and advice, in advance! D

Hi dcezanne,
I would recommend not to take too many cities on board. I would stick to London, Paris, and the Italian leg of your tour.
London 4 days Paris 4 days Venice 2 days Florence 4 days Rome 5 days
That would leave you one day to visit a place like Siena (between Florence and Rome (also doable as a daytrip from Florence), or maybe you want to stick the day to London, Depending on times of arrival, and departures. Also calculate that on the day you arrive, you have a jetleg.
I can't believe I'm talking somebody out of going to Madrid !!!, but it is better to save it for another time, and do a tour of Spain, with some more cities.
London - Paris is doable by plane, or with a cheap ticket on the Eurostar. Paris - Venice you can fly, train from Venice to Florence, and Florence to Rome, and fly back to London.

Welcome dcezanne!
I like Herrbert's suggested itinerary as it covers the most ground possible in the time you have whilst still giving you the chance to experience each city well. You just can't fit all of the cities you listed in to 20 days, unfortunately.
If you really wanted to see Provence, you could catch the TGV from Paris to Lyon (2hrs) then on to Avignon, Aix-en-Provence or Arles for 1 night, then train to Nice for 2 days, nighttrain to Venice (leave around 9pm, arrive Venice aroudn 7.30am) for 3 days (you could do a day trip to Verona, Padova or Bologna) from Venice) and train to Rome for 5 days and fly back to London. This means skipping Florence (I can't believe I'm telling someone to skip Florence!) and a lot more time on trains, but will at least get you to Provence and the Cote d'Azur.
After all that, I'm still inclined to go with Herrbert's itinerary. But only you know what you want to see most - let us know what you eventually decide.
