Hello everyone,
I'm new to this site and wanted to say thanks for all the tips everyone has posted. There's a lot of knowledge and experience on these boards!
Anyhow, a question on packing. I've been to Europe twice now on short trips over the past several years. One a month, the other 2 weeks. On these trips I've taken a padlock and bike cable to lock the pack while sleeping on trains, hostels, and such. Does anyone know of anything smaller and lighter that might work? The padlock/cable works great, is really secure and all, but is somewhat bulky and heavy. It would nice to hear how others have secured their packs.

This is likely not the best 'security' tip you will hear....but I dragged that damn heavy lock and cable all over Europe and NEVER used it. That said, I did not stay in hostels and never took a night train. ;D For those two occasions I well see the need...heck, I thought I would need it as well. Don't know of another alternative, but surely agree those things are heavy and bulky and for me....wasted.

A few more suggestions for you to consider. If you were happy with the security provided by the Padlock & Cable, why not continue with that method? Have a look at the Eagle Creek website. They offer a small braided steel cable and Padlock in their product line. It's very light and easy to carry. Of course, it won't provide maximum security, but given the inherent problems of securing a Backpack it should be adequate. Even if you took two of them on the trip, they wouldn't add much to your pack weight. You might also check www.magellans.com, as they have a number of locking devices shown, including one that comes with a retractable cable and built-in combination lock (you might find it useful to order their free print catalogue). Again, it's not maximum security, but should work reasonably well. Hope these comments will be of some help. Happy travels!!!

Keep in mind that you can't bring some locks as carry-on. I had to leave my bike cable at the security check last time I went to Europe (and didn't really miss it)

I used a smaller combination lock with a short link of steel chain - I didn't find it to be bulky or a bother at all. It was just long enough to tightly lock my bag to a post etc.
cheers!

Let me ask a question. What is it that you keep in the backpack that you need the lock for?
My daypack comes with me when i go sightseeing and when i leave the big backpack in the hostel. All my important stuff (camera) is in my day pack or in my money belt (passport, Eurail pass etc.).
So, my big backpack at the hostel really only has clothes in it. After many trips backpacking, I have never had anything stolen.
There is usually no need for any kind of bike lock device.
I use the small pad locks on the zippers of my big backpack simply as a visual deterrent.
As for train travel, don't fret. If you get freaked out on the routes that are rumored to be dangerous (Romania) then simply stay awake while on the train, or have your travel partner take turns sleeping with you.
