Hey I've already posted my itinerary on this board, and it was supposed to end with 4 solo nights in Barcelona. But now, I've decided to add Rome to the list, after Barcelona...but should I make it 3 or 4 nights? Cuz I also want to see Pompeii and possibly Capri (but definitely Pompeii).. should i split the trip btwn rome and pompeii, or just book a hostel IN rome and work my way to pompeii for a day? also, where IS pompeii exactly? i can't find it anywhere on my atlas, and every source says it's next to naples. should i book hostels in both rome AND naples, 2 nights each? plz help!

Choosing between 3 and 4 is very easy as it comes to Rome: 4 nights. Pompeii is possible as a daytrip (a long one, but it is possible from Rome), but if you also want to see Capri, I would suggest staying in Sorrento, or some other place on the Amalfi coast. But this would mean you will have less time in Rome, and Rome is a city, that deserves a lot of time. Pompeii was Roman City, but it was covered by a lava stream coming from Mnt. Vesuvius. You can find it on the other side of the vulcano (Napoli is North/West of the vulcano, and Pompeii is just South of it.). faculty.cua.edu/pennington/pompeii/PompeiMapDet.jpg

ghady,
if you have the time to spare, can you do 4 days Rome and 2-3 days Sorrento (a day to visit Capri, day on the coast Sorrento/Positano)? That would be ideal for you as you could visit Pompei on your way south or once you're based there.
Trying to do Rome, Pompei and Capri in 4 days isn't a good idea as you'll find you don't have enough time to do Rome justice as well as travel south to Pompei and Capri. You could try to fit Capri and Pompei in to one day of sightseeing, but you'd spend all your time travelling and about 5 minutes in each place, so it's not a good idea. You could stay in Naples and access both Capri one day and Pompei the next, but Sorrento is just that much prettier (and only 45min futher south).
If you do include Rome, I'm assuming you're flying from Barca to Rome, yes?
Not to be pedandic Herrbert, but Pompei was buried under a layer of ash (this and the gasses suffocated the residents) and then soil not lava. The winds blew the ash and gasses east and they "rained" on to the city. Although excavations have since found Pompei was built on lava fields. Herculaneum, just up the road from Pompei and on the other (west) side of the volcano, was buried in a flow of superheated pyroclastic matter (pyroclastic flow - rock, gas and ash in a fluid form), which is kind of like what we refer to as lava (without getting technical). I think lia studied this, maybe she can clarify.

Not a stupid question, just one with several answers! Yes you can get to Mt Vesuvius, getting up it is another matter...and I'm guessing that's what you meant. There are tours that take you up to the entrance by bus, but then it's another 10min walk to the crater/summit. The views are spectacular across the Bay of Naples and peering into a volcano is an awesome experience, if not a sulphuric one. Both times I've been up I've had private transport so I'm not aware of any public busses that run up the rather narrow road, but check the useful internet ( ) and see what you come up with. I know there are archaeological tours to Pompei and Herculaneum that sometimes include Vesuvius. That flight with Ryanair will probably be from Girona, which is a town north of Barcelona so allow time to get there. Otherwise there are flights from Barca to Rome with Vueling or Click Air.

Vueling has tickets as cheap as 20 euros and flying from Barcelona (el Prat), this would save you the transfer to Girona. www.vueling.com/EN/index.php
