Okay I have FINALLY booked everything...Flights, Trains, and Hostels. Now I have to figure out what to bring, and first off is what am I going to carry it in. So I have been doing a little research and reading some posts but I can't figure out what I need. I need a backpack that we can carry on the plane because I don't want to check luggage (too much bad luck with it) the problem is I dont want it to be TOO small. So if anyone knows of any good backpacks or good sites I can find the kind of backpack I am looking for PLEASE let me know. Thanks.

What airlines are you using? They all have different restrictions, so it's hard to say what will work for sure.
Ironically, it can sometimes be easier to carry-on a small suitcase (like 20"), because it can happen that an airline says that the backpack is an odd size so it has to go in some special category (that happened to my son with BMI at Heathrow even though it was a very normal backpack).
Maybe some people can post with backpacks they've been allowed to carry on, and on what airlines. If you are taking budget carriers in Europe, any backpack or suitcase can be pretty hard to squeak past, even if it theoretically meets the limits.
If you are taking a mainline US-based airline to Europe, any reasonable backpack or suitcase will probably be okay for that, at least with Northwest, Continental, Air Canada, and United, in my experience.

We are flying US Air to and from Europe. And we aren't taking any budget airlines in Europe just trains...I just don't know how much room I am going to need. So if anyone knows of any backpacks that are a good size and was able to carry it on, please let me know. Thanks. Bret
