MTH, thanks for the Post! I had a look at the Eurovision web site, and there are some awesome performers. However, I noticed that Italy is not represrented this year?
I wonder if another ABBA will be chosen this year (weren't they discovered after winning the Eurovision a number of years ago?).
Cheers!!!

MTH, However, I noticed that Italy is not represrented this year? I wonder if another ABBA will be chosen this year (weren't they discovered after winning the Eurovision a number of years ago?). Cheers!!! Italy hasn't been represented since 1997. (Luxembourg also has not been present since 1993) And for good reasons, as the Eurovision Songcontest is all about getting the most votes from your neighbours, and has nothing to do with the song, the singer(s) or the performance. It has become a Political Eastern European version of Idols. P.S. sorry about ABBA, that must have been the worst music to come out of Europe. (that and Celine Dion, who entered for Switzerland in 1988)

herrbert, LOL! Perhaps the music of ABBA is an "acquired taste"? I still enjoy their music, and always attend the shows of my favourite tribute band ( abbamaniacanada.com/). I photographed one of their shows (with their permission) last time they performed in this area. I also saw Mamma Mia when I was in London last fall, and will be seeing the movie when it opens on July 18th. I wasn't aware that Celine Dion had entered for Switzerland. Seems a bit odd, as she's Canadian? Thanks for the info on why Italy wasn't represented on Eurovision. I found that unusual, as the Italians seem to love music, and they are very good musicians! I'm really disappointed that our local Italian TV station hasn't carried either the San Remo festival or Festival Bar lately, as I really enjoyed them. The last time I was able to see Festival Bar, one of our local musicians, Daniel Powter, was featured extensively. It will be interesting to see who wins Eurovision? Cheers!

the Eurovision Songcontest is all about getting the most votes from your neighbours, and has nothing to do with the song, the singer(s) or the performance. It has become a Political Eastern European version of Idols. It really has, hasn't it. Guess that's how Russia won with that monstrosity!! My favourites were Azerbaijan, for pure epic operatic cheesiness and Ukraine for what could actually become a European hit. I guess that's also why it's even more cheesey now than 10 years ago (when I thought we'd reached the pinnacle of cheese with Norway in 1995, UK in 1997 and Dana International in 1998, although she wrote the Israel entry this year and it was pretty good despite the scoreboard). Yeah, Celine entering (and winning) for Switzerland in 1988 does seem odd, but an Australian (I think it was Gina G) entered for the UK in 1996 and there are other examples (again Switzerland had an Estonian group represent them a few years ago) as apparently there is no restriction on nationality of a person representing a particular country. And my theory about Italy is that they have so many "lounge singers" on TV (have a look next time you're there, particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings!) so it would be hard to choose who to send to Eurovision! Political or not, it's still good cheese! ;D

The UK are talking about not competing again because of the political voting. We watch it predicting the scores before they are read out. We are an Island we have no neighbours to help us out and all our ex-colonies are either not in Europe or hate us Only Ireland give us a break and that's just out of sympathy. The Eastern block voting means they are guaranteed a winner every year. They have won in for something like the last 6yrs. Boo Hiss I love eurovision - preserve the cheese I say and banish the politics

It's become quite an issue this year hasn't it?! Not helped by sir Tez saying he might not be commentating next year - he was super sarcastic this year, but we'd miss him just the same! I think I'm missing something here? Why the reference to "cheese" when mentioning EuroVision?
Perhaps this will be featured on local TV here, so I can see what this is all about.
Cheers!
