1. Traveling the world with your IPOD........ Thoughts? Suggestions on where to download/buy? Am I right that this would cheaper than guided tours in each city?
2. I've heard some hostels do free tours. Shall we compile a list?

i disagree with david regarding the ipod. while traveling a person can enjoy the site, talk to the locals, and immerse themselves with the environment but it's good to have something to remind you of home. i know that's how i felt when i was in europe for a month last year. my music helped me unwind and relax while on long train rides from city to city.
also, if you want to download some audio tours you can check out rick steve's website. i never used them but i do remember finding some on his page.

Katiekate, I assume you're specifically talking about using your Ipod for tours? In that case, I've got lots of info!! I downloaded a whole bunch of travel & tour podcasts to get inspired for my upcoming Europe trip! Not sure if I'll use them when I'm there, but they will be good to have in case! Basically just go to the Itunes "store" and go to the (almost all free!) podcasts section, and find travel! Or... you can search for specific ones... I subscribed to these tour podcasts (and I'm collecting episodes!): "Free Audio London Walks", "ItalyGuides.it", and "Walks of a Lifetime". And I also am very into the general travel podcasts! "Travel with Rick Steves" (the podcast version of his radio show. Love it! It's the best for Europe travel, in my opinion at least!), "Amateur Traveler Podcast", "Frommers.com podcast", "Lonely Planet Travelcasts", & "The Indie Travel Podcast" (I really like this one too, they're really short, but informative about general travel tricks!)

I havent been on one, but I will be when I go to Europe. Based on opinions and reviews on other boards, they are really really good. They basically just do an overview of everything, and are a good way to get to know the city, and figure out what is on the top of your list to further see. They dont go into any of the sites they pass by, but again, do a tour in the morning and that way you will have gotten to see the city a bit, and also have seen what interests you the most in order to come by again and go into etcetc.
The tour guides do work off tips, and while youre not obligated to tip them, id suggest tipping them around 3 or 4 euro if the tour was really good.
