Hi,
I've had a change of heart, instead of backpacking I will be staying in Machbar am Nackar, near Stuttgart with a host family for free and attending a language school ( in exchange i take their boys to school in the morning and sports in the afternoon, a bit like an au pair..) ..I've got everything sorted except my flights. I need to leave at the start of september, and I am staying for 1 year minimum. Is there any option for me to buy a return ticket but able to use that after a year? I mean...around 1200-1300 AUD is the cheapest I can get (sydney-frankfurt) one-way and a return is 1600...but i am not sure if i can book the return from over a year..
I really need some cheap flight advice...sydney>frankfurt, cheap as possible.
AND most flights I've noticed stop in Hong Kong or singapore/taiwan..etc is it any possibility to go shopping during my wait to get myself a cheap laptop and camera from these areas? anything i should watch out for/keep an out an eye for..etc? cameras/laptops are sooo expensive to buy in australia compared to there.

alphamoth, I don't have much information on flights from Australia, but you may find it helpful to speak with a travel agent. It may be possible to arrange a return ticket with an "open" date? It should be possible to get less expensive flights by using larger "hub" airports such as Frankfurt, Paris or Amsterdam. One potential problem area is the fact that you're staying for a year, which is well in excess of the three-month Schengen limit. I've never travelled as a student, so perhaps there is some provision to allow longer stays if you're attending school? I can't offer any suggestions regarding shopping in Hong Kong, as I've never been there. If you're planning to leave the airport to go shopping, be sure to allow ample time for travel into town and then back to the airport in time for your flight to Germany. You may be able to get answers to some of your questions by posting these at thorntree.lonelyplanet.com. Good luck and happy travels!
