What is the cheapest way to get from Leeds to Edinburgh? I have a friend who is moving there and I'm looking to make several weekend trips to Edinburgh.

katiekate, I suspect the cheapest method of travel from Leeds to Edinburgh would be via National Express Coach. According to their website, the journey takes about 5-6 hours and the cost is £38 each way.
I highly doubt that travel via train would be any cheaper (BritRail has a reputation for being somewhat "pricey")? However, train would probably be faster. Crystal would probably be the best one to answer that question.
Cheers!

If you purchase tickets in ADVANCE on Virgin Trains, the cheapest fare (one-way from Leeds to Edinburgh Waverley) would be £11.50. I put in the dates for August 20th and the cheapest fare available was £14.00, running up to £16.00, £18.50 and £20.50. It wouldn't shock me to see a walk-up fare of around £70 if you buy your ticket on the day of travel. National Express East Coast Trains also offer services, starting at £10.25 and up, if booked in advance.
To beat the exhorbant prices, advance planning is essential. If you're planning to travel by train quite a bit, perhaps investing in a discount card membership program would be a good idea. You'd have to pay a yearly fee but if you travel enough, you'll reap the rewards.

You could try megabus.com too. There is even a website for lift sharing now - something like liftshare.com. Click on the link below for loads of information on budget travel around the UK Backpax Magazine

megabus, megabus, megabus - they are coming out as the cheapest for travel in the UK at the moment. They do bus and train tickets. My mam just travelled Carlisle to Inverness (7hr journey) for £14 and that included a booking fee. The closest national express ticket was £40. Plus I agree with PONR you can look at booking train tickets a LONG way in advance to get some great savings and avoid travel at peak times.
