It's looking quite likely that I might go to Munich for a professional-related thing. So I am thinking that if I have say 3 or 4 nights in Munich, where might I go for another 5 nights?
I'll have my laptop along, which will make me less freewheeling (not that that's my usual style anyway). I definitely will not be in a mood to rush.
Here are some possibilities from Munich. What do you think?
* Take the train to Salzburg (90 minute ride). I don't know much about it, other than the sound of music. Plus it will be November.
* Take the train to Vienna. I'm sure I would have plenty to see here. (4 hour ride)
* Take the train to Verona (5.5 hour ride), and onwards to Padua, perhaps flying back out of Venice.
* Take the train to Prague. (6 hour ride) * I just thought of Strasbourg, which I've wanted to visit for a long time. The train times between Strasbourg, Munich, and Frankfurt are not bad.
Bahn.de has 29 or 39-Euro tickets available for any of these routes (although they are prone to selling out).
I've missed this entire area of Europe (other than for Venice) in my travels, so I am open to suggestions.
I'm also thinking I might just fly in/out of Frankfurt (or maybe open-jaw with the non-German destination), because there are reasonably priced nonstop flights from Vancouver and Seattle to Frankfurt, and the train from Frankfurt to Munich is about 3 hours, the train from Frankfurt to Salzburg is about 5 hours, and so forth, which is a lot nicer than dealing with two more flight connections.

WT, great to hear you'll get another trip to Europe this year!
I would also suggest Prague (don't believe you've been before - is that correct?), Innsbruck (and associated regions) and Salzburg. Vienna is another suggestion that could work if you wanted to do 2 full days there and 3 in Prague (without side trip). If you wanted to just spend time in the region around Munich, then take the time to do the day trips to Neuschwanstein, Lindau, Hohenschwangau (see if you can fit Herrenchiemsee in too) and then go on to Innsbruck with a side trip to Salzburg. That way you can also just meander along on relatively short train journeys during Autumn/Fall (which is still pretty even in November) and see a few things along the way with some nice places to base yourself too.
Strasbourg is, of course, another great choice, but as jack has already asked, it's a matter of city vs town and how you'd like to spend your days. Eating your way through Strasbourg for 5 days might be nice! All the places you've listed are easily accessible from Munich so what's on the top of your list? And would you consider flying say Munich-Prague?
Let me know if you need notes on Munich sights/restaurants/accomodation, etc, too.

This ended up working out best for me, and I think I will stick with it (I have until tonight to cancel my ticket in favor of some other plan): Fly into Munich. Stay 3 or 4 nights. Possibly stay 1 night in Passau (enroute to Vienna) 4 nights in Vienna. Fly out of Vienna. I get 6.5 hours between flights in Copenhagen, which means I get to run out and see Copenhagen again briefly.
MTH, certainly I'd like to hear your Munich tips.

WT, I'll PM you some information for Munich and Vienna. I've been through Passau quite a few times but have only ever spent an hour or so there so can only recommend the old town, the waterfront and St Stephan's Cathedral, but it is a pretty town to visit.
