I'm now booking hostels and I'm trying to figure out how long I should allow for each city. I was thinking...
Ghent: Arrive on the 3rd of May, spend what is left of it exploring the city and all of he 4th.
Brugges: Take the train to Ghent on the 5th, check into the hostel and spent most of the day exploring the city. (They are only 30 minutes apart, these towns). Spend the 6th on a tour of WWI battle fields that gives me the evening to continue to explore Brugges.
Brussels: Leave for Brussels on the morning of the 7th. It's only an hour train ride. Spend that day and the next (8th) in Brussels before heading to the Maastricht on the 9th.
Maastricht: Spend two nights, one full day in Maastricht before heading to Amsterdam on the 11th.
Amsterdam: May 11 - 15th, with a day trip to Haarlem.
From the 15th on I'll be in Germany with my friend.
How does this sound? Too much time for some places? Not enough for others?

It looks good, maybe you could consider to stay in either Gent or Brugge and to use that as a base for the days in Western Belgium.
I don't know where you friend in Germany lives, but maybe (depending on where he lives) it would be better to swap Amsterdam and Maastricht.

She's in Bremen, so Amsterdam is the easiest way to get to her.
I keep thinking of skipping Maastricht and going for Den Hague as I had planned. It just seems like backpeddlng going that far away from my next target in Amsterdam.
I originally thought about staying in Gent for the whole time (except for Brussels) but it meant two days of train tickets to get to Bruges. Is it worth that to just HQ in Gent?

Maastricht is not that far from Amsterdam, you can reach it in 2,5 hours, so if you have the time, you can do it as a daytrip if you really want to.
In between Amsterdam and Bremen, an other option is the city of Groningen, Often overlooked, but a very nice city in the North-East of the Netherlands. It is also a studenttown, with a lot of nightlife.

Well, a few changes..one major.
My friend will be joining me for a week in London before hitting the continent. I love that city and she wanted to visit again. I'm looking forward to it. Final Ininerary: most hostels booked.
April 29th: Fly out of Halifax April 30 - May 7th: London May 7 - 10: Bruges May 10-12: Gent May 12 - 15: Amsterdam May 15 - 24: Germany, including Bremen and Berlin
We got this great rate at the City of London YHA for a twin, private room. They went on sale. Total price for the two of us for 7 nights is 351GPS. That's cheap for London.

I glad you got an itinerary you like, and that you don't have to skip London!

Ya! London is my city. I LOVE IT.
Funny enough, the Euro is higher than I was expecting against the Canadian dollar but the pound is way lower. I bought 100 GPS the other day for $188 Cdn. We've also booked our hostel already (YHA and had to pay in advance) and it worked out to $345 CDN each for 7 nights! That's why I'm extending my time there.

I swear I"m the worst planner in the world. I want to go everwhere! Since I first started planning my trip to Europe the Euro has gone up from $1.50 to $1.71 CDN. At the same time, the Pound has gone from 2.15 to 1.90 (or lower! I bought some at 1.88). So, the continental part of my trip is getting more expensive and the London part of my trip cheaper. I've always loved Great Britain and I've spent some time exploring it. I want to do more. I'm now thinking of skipping Belgium and Amsterdam to spend a week in Wales before flying to Germany. I'll be able to get back to the continent again. I don't doubt that. But I'm thinking I might want to take advantage of the lowest Pound I can ever rememember!

Hmm...I'm thinking I may have a last minute change to my itinerary. I've been suffering some foot issues and have been looking at ways to cut back on the trip, somewhat. London is set in stone, as is Germany, so it's Belgium/Netherlands that is up in the air.
I"m wondeirng if I should cut out Gent (two nights) and add one on to Bruges and another to Maastricht. I only had one full day in Gent. Not sure if all the lugging and moving is worth it.
