I'm back. What a great trip - despite the cold and wind, I'm so glad I visited Vienna.

nevermind Vienna. You have seen Goran Bregovic !!! I love his music, and I am dying to see him and his orchestra play one day. Your story reminds me that I want to revisit Vienna soon. I like it that you liked the MQ (MuseumQuartier) I think they have done a great job. (as you might know, this is where once the stables of the Habsburgers were). I choose the MuMok when I was there, and it was great. I can't see a remark about Marilleneis, but I guess it wasn't the time of year. ;D

WT, great to read you had a good time in Vienna. And yes, that early-Winter Viennese wind - I remember it well! Such a shame about the behaviour of some of those at the Musikverein - the venue does lend itself to expecting more decorum, but at least you got to see/hear your concert as planned. Did you end up changing your accommodation at the last minute? And so very glad you made it to the Christmas Market at Rathausplatz - beautiful time of year, especially at night.

No, I didn't make it to a Heurigen. But the tavern-style restaurant I went to several times, I really liked.
There's so much I didn't end up doing in Vienna.
Herrbert, I'm sure you would have loved the concert. I had a seat where I was perched on a high chair in one of the side boxes, behind three people in normal (dining-room style) chairs in the first row. This chair was not very comfortable, as I was like a kid whose feet dangled above the ground (although I'm reasonably tall). But by shifting position, it was tolerable. I'm sure that if this concert had been in Vancouver, people would have been dancing in the aisles, but of course this did not occur in Vienna.
MTH, I changed my accommodation in Vienna a few weeks ago. I booked the hotel through ameropa.de for a very good rate considering it was such a nice 4* hotel - 61.5 Euros per night. One reason was that Pension Franz did not have laptop safes, and that was making me very anxious because I was compelled to carry around my laptop, with a great deal of valuable data and programs, on this trip. The other reason was because I was going to have way too much luggage, and did not feel like carrying it up 3 flights up stairs to reception, plus more flights to my room. I can definitely say after this trip that I'll never take a laptop along unless I am compelled to do so.
I wish I had got some Marilleneis - I love apricots! The nearest was getting some apple-apricot juice at some point.

The only reason I asked is that I've stayed at Hotel Lindner and really enjoyed it - the Belvedere Garden behind it is great in Summer! How was Munich and I'm intrigued about the German train issue?

Munich was very nice, although almost all of the sightseeing I did there was walking around at night. I've started a new thread about the remainder of my trip (which I have not finished writing up yet). (Warning: some sad content) www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2&tid=35169136

WT, that is a sad event that occurred on your train journey, never a nice thing to experience.
On a brighter note, I'm glad you got to see some of Munich, even if it was only by night.

WT, glad to hear that you had such a fantastic trip! No doubt you're starting to plan the next one.
I can relate to the "unfortunate incident" you encountered. I experienced something similar on a train ride through Austria.
Welcome back!

Thanks, Eagle. Sorry to hear you have had a similar experience. I am going to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico next.
