I am planning to go sometime in May (I'll be leaving during the first week and staying about 22-24 days for our entire trip). Part of our trip will be spent in Austria, and I'll be traveling with 3 others. We're planning on spending either 5 or 6 days in Austria after leaving Italy and before moving on to Germany. My question is where do you think our time would be best spent? I was planning on spending at least 2 days in Vienna, but besides that I'm open to suggestions. This is my first time in Austria by the way. Any advice would be great, Thanks!

It depends on where in Italy you are coming from but my idea would be to spend some days in the moutains. So Innsbruck would be a pretty obvious choice, after that Salzburg and the finally Vienna (Wien). I think the 5 or 6 days are a couple of days too short. Look at at least spending two days in Innsbruck, 2 in Salzburg and 4 in Vienna. In other topics you will read about a daytrip from Salzburg to Werfen, but it might be a bit too early too go there in the beginning of May, as Eisriesenwelt might not have opened for the season around that time. (check there website if you want to go there.)

kjplumber, to add to herrbert's always excellent suggestions, some places you could consider would be Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg or Hallstatt. However, with only five days or so, I doubt that you will be able to visit more than one or two of them.
Salzburg is a wonderful smaller city, and of course famous as the birth place of Mozart. The Hohensalzburg Fortress above the city is interesting to explore. Salzburg is also a good location to take day trips to nearby locations such as Berchtesgaden, which is a significant location for WW-II history. The Documentation Centre above town has some interesting displays, and some of the Bunker complexes are open to visitors.
Hallstatt is a very small but incredibly beautiful town in the Salzkammergut region of Austria (somewhat between Salzburg and Vienna). It's about 7000 years old (older than Rome) and is famous for the Salt Mines that are located there. The Mine is located above the town, accesible via a Funicular, and tours are offered. There's a large old Castle called Rudolfsturm at the top of the Funicular that has a restaurant, and it's great to sit on the patio in the afternoon and enjoy the view (and of course a cold "beverage"). The Museum in the main part of town is also interesting.
Those are a couple of locations that you can consider.
Happy travels!

WT, I'd also like to get back there right about now, but from I've been seeing on BBC News this would not be a good time. There was a severe snow fall in Austria a few days ago, and they're probably still digging out! I'm not a big fan of winter, so I won't be travelling any where that has snow.
I'm in the process of putting the "finishing touches" to another "therapeutic" winter trip in mid-January (hopefully they have some sunshine?). Rather than Hawaii this year, I'm going to try Vegas for a change. I haven't been there since 1976 (I guess that "dates" me a bit). I have to stop for a few days in Seattle on the way back to attend an event hosted by a well know travel writer, so the whole trip should be an adventure!
Cheers!

Thanks for your help everyone. We've decided to go to Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna so now we're just deciding how long to spend at each and how long total we'll spend in Austria.
