Back in Venice now....but, New Years Day in Rome was fantastic! Weather god smiled once more. Off to Borghese park\grounds for that walk I did not take earlier in the week due to bad weather.
Again, on this holiday seemed everyone in Rome had the same idea that morning. And, wonders of wonders, they had a Xmas market still going which included a hot air balloon 'lift'...not really could be called a ride as it merely went up 500 feet and then bobbed around a bit and came down. But....the most spectacular views to be had....15 euros which I did not find too bad at all. A glorious day for some glorious sights!
After that headed off to Piazza Popolo where the big NYDay party was going on. Literally thousands of folks, huge party, music, food, parades, wonderful!
Oh, prior had a nice leasurly stroll down Via Veneto.....a beautiful walk in Rome. Caught the train the next day back to Venice, again through some of the most beautiful scenery on god's earth in my mind. Venice is sunny, blue, but noticably colder than Rome.
Today visited the Cemeterio which I had not done on prior visits....never have I seen a cemetary so overwhelmed with flowers! Maybe because of the holidays, but I swear I have never seen anything like this. Looked like a florists window. And then rode out to Murano...have been there before but took advantage of the terrific weather for a nice vaporetto ride.
Oh, yesterday went to Lido....what a different world that is from Venice. And could someone explain to me why on an island barely 7 miles long and 1\2 mile wide one would feel the need of a Land Rover, Jeep or any other SUV you'd care to include?
Crowds here are quite a bit more than when I first arrived 3 weeks ago. The 'final' holiday in Italy is the 06th so many folks it seems are extending their Christmas\New Year's holiday till then. And actually, for the moment I am seeing\hearing more Italian tourists than anything else, other than Japanese of course. Still a fair number of Americans of course, but not like I encountered in Rome last week.
One more day and then home....how can it be nearly over so soon??
