Considering a backpacking adverture of my own sometime over the summer...probably 3 week trip to break me in.
My initital idea is to maybe start in Germany somewhere...head through Amsterdam...then....somehow...make it to London for a flight back to the States.
So, anyone, tell me how crazy that super early plan sounds. I have no idea what I'm doing and really want to do this.
Hi, I'm Jeff.

fiddlemysticks/jeff/crazy, welcome to GFE!
A three week trip to Europe for the Summer sounds like an excellent idea, and in no way crazy...unless you try to fit 7 countries in to 3 weeks, then we'll certify you!
To start you off, have a look at the other Posts in the Pre-Travel Planning and Itinerary sections of the Boards for some ideas on what is achieveable in your timeframe, as well as ideas on travel modes (flights, trains, etc) and accommodation.
Things to do for your next Post: 1. work out a Budget (a figure per day usually helps) that you can use on your trip 2. read the other Posts and make a list of cities/towns that interest you (think about why, not just "cause Ive heard of them"). You've already listed Germany, Amsterdam and London, so you're on your way. 3. tell us what interests you, ie what you'd like to see/do in places, that will help with recommendations 4.list some possible dates for travel - there are certain times in Summer better suited to certain places (ie going to the beach in August means it will be super crowded as not only tourists by locals take their holidays then too).
Get back to us when you've had a chance to make some lists and we'll go from there. Happy planning!

fiddlemysticks, Welcome to the Boards! I have a few initial comments...
To begin with, your "early plan" doesn't sound "crazy" at all. You have to start somewhere, and if you're interested in seeing Germany, Amsterdam and London that's a good start.
You might want to check a few Guidebooks to get a more specific idea on which cities you want to visit in Germany and perhaps a few other places as well. Using open jaw flights (into Germany, home from London) is an excellent idea! You'll also have to check to determine which flights are available in your area, and the cost for these.
One thing to keep in mind if you're planning to travel during the summer (July / August) is that's the peak travel season in Europe so it will be very busy and crowded. I'd recommend pre-booking accommodations.
Once you've got an approximate list of cities worked out, I'm sure the group here will be able to help you put an Itinerary together. As this is your first trip to Europe, I'd highly recommend reading the Guidebook Europe Through The Back Door, as it will provide you with a LOT of good information on travelling in Europe. It's more of a "pre-read" book, rather than one that you would pack along on a trip.
Don't be too concerned about being a "first timer". We were all there at one time.
Cheers!

Your route sounds very much like the one I've picked for myself only in reverse, I'm flying into London and then returning from Germany. It was actually cheaper to go that way..at least with Air Canada.
