I've just discovered this "secret" link
on the lastminute.com website. It lists hotels that will take bookings at discounted prices. The hotels are trying to fill their rooms. This is not just on European hotels but worldwide. The hotels are not hostels so are more expensive than your usual backpackers hotel but with a good discount offered it may mean you can afford to have a bit of luxery for a few nights. Just remember to order your search based on price or stars.

The only catch is that they do not want to tell people that have already booked their hotel rooms that you can now get the same room at 50% off so they keep the name of the hotel a secret until after you have confirmed the booking. A little trick though is to copy and paste the hotel info into a search engine and see which hotel it throws up because lastminute.com often use the exact wording from the hotel's own website.
