The potential itinerary I have worked out for next summer involves a lot of flying between cities. I've been trying to look up prices of these flights online but they are looking very expensive. Does anyone know the best site to use to find cheap flights around Europe? Or does anyone know anything about something like global flight passes?

With these sites: www.whichbudget.comwww.skyscanner.netHowever, I would not expect the flights to be loaded until 6-9 months before you leave. Look at the budget carrier sites like Ryanair, EasyJet, Germanwings, etc. and figure out what their end of schedule date is now, and sign up for updates. Then you will be able to figure out when they are likely to load their summer 2010 flights.

manna,
As you're planning on doing "a lot of flying between cities", a few points to mention.....
> Be sure to pack light, as some of the budget airlines have VERY restrictive baggage limits (especially RyanAir). If you exceed those, you'll be paying hefty overweight charges!
> Some airlines in Europe (especially the U.K.) allow only ONE carry-on bag only. That doesn't mean "one and a personal item" such as a Purse or Camera bag as is usually the case here, so be sure to pack accordingly.
> Be VERY clear on the terms & conditions when booking. Quite often the fares are non-changeable and non-refundable once booked. Some of the budgets (again, RyanAir) offer cheap fares but have numerous supplementary charges, so be sure to factor those into your budget.
> Some airlines base their fares on a "sliding scale" - as the flight fills up, the fares increase. Those at the beginning get a very cheap fare (undoubtedly "below cost") and those booking after end up subsidizing the early bookers.
> I've noticed that some budget airlines in Europe are now posting their fares inclusive of all taxes and fees. Be sure to note whether this is the case when you're comparing prices.
> Some of the budgets appear to offer very cheap fares, but this is not always the whole story. Some flights are operated out of airports that are very distant from city centres (ie: Beauvais which is a considerable distance from Paris) so the time and cost of getting to & from these airports has to be considered too.
Happy travels!

www.edreams.com, works very well, although it can take a while until you find out which company you are flying with. It searches for cheap and normal airlines, which makes it clear that normal airlines can be just as cheap as the so-called cheap ones. It will be too early to see the prices for next year, as the shedules are not there yet. Normally of after the presentation of the new shedules by the companies (somewhere during the winter-early spring), you should be able to see the prices and reserve the tickets.

herrbert- I just went to edreams.com to look at a flight from Barcelona to Granada. It was $10.90 (USD) per person on Spanair.... can that be right?!
When I went to Ireland 3 years ago I got a cheap fare from Cork to England but they ended up cancelling the flight.... is something like that going to happen with this?

Take a look at Spanair directly and see what you get. But it's quite possible for there to be a cheap ticket, although they can sell out quickly. Most likely, the ticket will not include a checked bag, and the carry-on allowance is usually such that it's basically necessary to check a bag, which adds some more cost (like 15-20 Euros). Then there might be a credit card fee, and possibly another fee or two, but still, air travel in Europe can be very cheap with the right ticket.

The way it works a lot of times is that there is a limited number of seats that are sold at a very low price, and they slightly increase the price. But 10,90 can be right, but probably it will be increase with taxes, and a charge for using the credit card. (Taxes depend on the landing rights of the airports, credit card surcharge is usually fixed.) Cancellations can always occur, due to different circumstances, but you have to know you rights, in case this happens. Check out this website of the EU: ec.europa.eu/transport/passengers/air/air_en.htm
