Dear Readers:
You'll have to forgive me for not having written much in the last two weeks. My course load went up and I found myself somewhat overwhelmed by both work and all the events that the program had planned. It was a really good busy though! Rest assured that in that time I did do some really fantastic things: Bastille Day, the end of the Tour de France, Vaux-le-Vicomte, and a visit to the Opera. I promise that I will get around to writing about all of that (in fact I even have some drafts ready to go) but right now I wanted to take this opportunity to write about something else . . .
Today is my last full day in Paris. My time at the Cornell Summer Institute has now sadly come to an end. It seems as though this last month and a half absolutely flew by! But then I loook at my pictures. And I realize how much I have experienced in such a short amount of time. Not only the fascinating classes, but a different glimpse into life in Paris, meeting new and incredibly wonderful friends, and getting to know other parts of Europe!
I have been absolutley blessed to be able to come here again. I know at times I may complain (living abroad is never easy) but truth is that this city holds a very very special place in my heart. It feels a bit like coming home when I come back here. And I don't know how to explain it -- but I have this persistent feeling that I'm not done with Paris yet. I'll be back. And probably not just for a quick visit.
This city is absolutely magical. If you ever get a chance -- come visit! There's nothing quite as spectacular as standing on the Place de la Concorde and seeing the Louvre, the Madeleine, the Champs Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel tower -- all by turning a full 360 degrees. I know I've said this before and I stand by it:This place is so magnificent it's hard to believe it wasn't built for tourism!
But even if you don't get a chance to come to Paris -- travel!!! Get to know other cultures, explore different parts of the world, assure yourself that it is indeed round. Your life will become richer for the experiences you'll have. And the memories -- oh the memories will last a life time!
I suspect that the magnitude of this trip won't hit me until I'm back home. Such was the case on my last trip. I fully expect that I'll be even more awed by then! But in the meantime, I am absolutely delighted to have seen Paris again, attended a fantastic summer institute, and been able to share it all with an incredible group of friends.
So I leave Paris with a bit of a heavy heart. It's like saying good-bye to a friend. But no worries: I'll be back one of these days . . .
We'll always have Paris.
