So whats Bern like? worth a visit? I have approximately 8-9 days for Switzerland and Austria...and after researching I can't seem to decide what to do or what to see!
Austria to me is the biggest mystery, Salzburg is nice...but, what else?
Anyone have any stories/ advice for me?

matchbox,
Welcome to the Boards! I have a few comments to start the discussion.
Bern is a good choice, but you might also have a look at the Berner Oberland region of Switzerland, especially the small village of Gimmelwald which is a big favourite with many here (including me!). This is located in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, just outside Interlaken. The small village of Murren (just above Gimmelwald) is beautiful (and much photographed).
In order to clear up the "mystery" of Austria, could you indicate what type of sights you're interested in seeing there? Salzburg is great and you could easily spend 2-3 days there. You could also take day trips to Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut area or Berchtesgaden. There's also lots to see in Vienna.
You might want to have a look at Guidebooks for Switzerland and Austria to get some ideas on sights that might interest you.
Happy travels!

I have travelled a bit in switzerland and I don't know if i would recommend bern... I didn't find it such an exciting city and there is not so much to see there. I don't know what exactly you are looking for, but zurich is a neat city and so are lausanne and geneva (in the french area of switzerland)
