student card?

regarding my future trip to UK/ireland...the travel book I have recommends getting a student card to get discounts on hostels and what not. I am a 25 year old student. Would it be would the cost and effort for a 3-week-long trip with a slightly loose budget?

In 2009, I backpacked Europe for 3 months and only needed an international student identity card once in Budapest. I was 24 at the time and my University student card was good enough for all the student rates.
