I have been on raileurope.com trying to price out trips from Granada to Madrid as well as Madrid to Toledo and it comes back with an error message each time. Is it because these are not high speed trains and do not do reservations online?

I`m not sure why you are having the error, but be sure to check the Renfe site directly for train fares too.

I looked again at what you posted. There is no reason to pre-purchase a Madrid to Toledo ticket, except it`s true some runs get sold out. I think this is about 14 Euros, and you can purchase it at the Atocha Renfe station. I don`t think you can get any discount for it, other than to buy a roundtrip ticket instead of a one-way.

Seconded, you can just get tickets for the trip to Toledo at the Atocha trainstation. I think they are run by a smaller company as well. It is a trip that takes only 30 minutes. For a roundtrip you get a bit of a discount, but you need to state the time of your return. To be a bit more flexible, I would suggest to go for two one way tickets. It will be around 14-15 euros, I donĀ“t know if they raised the prices on the 1st of January.
Another possibility is to take the bus from the busstation at Mendez Alvaro. It is cheaper, but they take one hour. But for your bus ticket you need to set your returndate. I did the trip once by bus and once by train, and I would go by train.
In Spain the general rule is: the faster the transport the more you pay. (and yes there are some stretches on which the bus is faster, and therefor more expensive.)
